Bought in Kenya in 1960, this Anglia was thrust into the rally world early on in life when it took part in a local rally around Nairobi. Its new owner, Leon Baillon, brought it to the Jumapili Rally as there wasn't a car available for him and the car was prepared by the local Ford agent. Sadly the gearbox got torn apart on a rock while going through a drift outside of Nairobi, and the car had to be towed to a friend's place nearby. With no replacement gearbox to be found, the navigator, Peter Hughes, brought another car out and swapped its gearbox into the Anglia so they could finish. Even with this delay, the pair managed to finish high up.
Leon lived in Australia for a time, where he rallied the Anglia at least once. When he moved back to SA, the Anglia was used in local club events around Pietermaritzburg. In 1967, Leon crashed the car into a tree due to an unmarked gate in the notes. The car was later taken down to Durban to a fellow rally driver's panel beating business and repaired. The Anglia's last rally was the 1968 Total Rally with the late Steve Pike, which ended in disaster when the navigator's calculator broke.
The car currently has a 1500 pre crossflow fitted, though the original 1000cc (in pieces) is still available. It has chassis-strengthening plates, bash plates and a few accessories.
Papers are in order (status reflects 'Used/gebruik') and licence is up to date.
Available to view by appointment in Pietermaritzburg.
