The Jaguar Mark II needs no introduction. With its powerful engine and roomy interior, this luxury sports saloon gained a reputation as a popular getaway car among criminals. The 1950s advertising slogan for Jaguar aptly summarises the car, “Grace . . . Space . . . Pace”.
The Mark II was produced between 1959 and 1967 with all three versions of the advanced Jaguar XK6 I6 engine, the 2.4, 3.4 and 3.8 litre. The elegant body lines of the Mark II make the car an attractive and more affordable option than its slightly more ostentatious sibling, the E-Type.
This dark blue 1967 Mark II 3.4 with overdrive is a very original model that spent 47 of its 55 years of life in Johannesburg so is free of rust. The car was regularly driven and lovingly cared for by its late owner for 33 years. He had purchased the Jaguar in 1989 from Graham Austin, formerly from British Sports Cars in Benoni, who also serviced and maintained the vehicle until it came to Cape Town in 2014. For the past few years the car has been serviced by Steve Marsh Classic Autos. A comprehensive service record with receipts exists for the past 25 years.
This particular car is rare among other Mark II models in that it features the Coombs conversion cooling louvres cut into the bonnet. This functional modification, as used on E-Types, resolves overheating issues and enhances the car's aesthetics. In 2007 the car was repainted to its present dark blue colour, simultaneously having its original upholstery replaced with cream-coloured leather.
