The Land Rover Series 3 was introduced in 1971 and was pretty much a face-lifted version of the Series 2 and 2a (most parts are interchangeable between the 2a and the 3) but featured a few mechanical improvements over the Series 2a.
It had the fully synchromesh four-speed gearbox that had been fitted to late-model Series 2a cars, the headlights were mounted on the front of the fenders/wings, and the front metal grille was replaced with a plastic one. The bonnet of the Series 3 was re-styled with a rounded front edge and recessed spare wheel.
The interior of the Land Rover Series 3 looked distinctly different. The plain metal central dashboard of the Series 2 and 2a was replaced with a plastic one which relocated the instruments directly in front of the driver, making them more visible.
Rare to South Africa, diesel-powered Series 3 imported new from Northern Ireland for use during the construction of the Sishen-Saldanha railway line. It is a very early Series 3, with the likes of the Series 2 hinges still in evidence and workhorse pedigree parts such as a PTO-driven compressor that charges an air tank, which feeds to a rear bumper-mounted quick-coupling hose fitting to allow tyre pressure drops and pumping for sandy conditions.
When the construction of the railway line was completed in 1980, a local Rooibos tea farmer took ownership for use on the farm. The current owner bought it from the farmer and registered it in South Africa in 1991. Since then, it has been used as a family shuttle to and from the beach and when moving inland used as a weekend toy and for hunting trips out of town. Regular maintenance including a recent drivetrain (engine, gearbox, diffs and driveshaft) refurbishment by a Land Rover specialist has kept it in top mechanical condition, and resisting the urge to give the body a fresh coat of paint has resulted in a wonderful hard-earned patina.
