The Mercedes-Benz SL55 AMG was launched in 2002 and was the fastest automatic car in the world at that time. Styling changes over the standard SLs included:

• A different front bumper and grille
• Redesigned side skirts and rear bumper
• Quad exit exhaust tips
• 18-inch multi-spoke wheels

The 5.4-litre supercharged V8 powered the rear wheels through a five-speed automatic gearbox. This combination translates to a power output of 493bhp and a top speed limited to 250km/h, although if derestricted it can reach over 300km/h. For a comfortable GT car, it had impressive acceleration too, hitting 100km/h from a standstill in just 4.5 seconds. Performance-tuned suspension and 8-piston front brake callipers meant that this performance was manageable.

The SL55 AMG was known to be a very high specification car with a list of extras included a Bose audio system, bi-xenon headlamps, ventilated sports seats, cruise control and electronic parking assistance by means of the Parktronic system. Along with those, you also got some electronic driver aids to enhance the overall driving experience such as ABS, stability control, body roll control and traction control.

Delivered new on the 25th of April 2003 from Sandown Motors in Sandton. It is finished in the desirable colour combination of Brilliant Silver Metallic (744M) with red leather interior. Optional extras ordered on this SL55 AMG include:

Went through a 60-point check at Mercedes-Benz prior to being listed on auction with the feedback below.

Not noted by Mercedes-Benz in the 60-point check above, the ABC (Active Body Control) fault light does come up when the car has been parked and the car moves to its lowest suspension setting. Apart from this fault, when this SL55 AMG is fired up, it runs and drives very well and is cosmetically good. The rims are unmarked but the radiator grille does need repair.

This is an opportunity to secure an AMG performance convertible at a fraction of its original purchase price. The correct buyer who invests time and a bit of money on the areas that require attention will unlock the potential of this example and reap the rewards and enjoyment for the price of an entry-level Korean hatchback.
